Ayurvedic Heartburn and Acidity Remedies and Cures: Radishes

Dhanvantari is the Hindu God of Ayurveda so it seem appropriate to choose a photograph of him to illustrate this article providing information on one of the many Ayurvedic heartburn and acidity remedies and cures.  (I could of course have chosen a photograph of some radishes instead!)  Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which literally translated means “the complete knowledge for a long life” and Ayurvedic medicine is complementary and alternative system of treatment from India which is many centuries old.  It is based mainly on the use of plant based medicines.

An Ayurvedic practitioner will take a holistic view of the person in determining what treatments are needed and radishes are one of the many treatments commonly prescribed to reduce acidity and prevent heartburn.  As is often the case with heartburn many “cures” are often also cited as a “cause” and radishes fall into this category.

Ayurvedic medicine prescribes their use in two ways, eaten raw without salt or juiced.  If radishes are juiced the juice should be drunk straight away so that no potency is lost.  I have seen pickled grated radish also recommended as a heartburn remedy but not as an Ayurvedic treatment.

Why radishes are good for preventing heartburn and reducing acidity

Ayurvedic medicine considers that the  benefits in treating acidity and heartburn come from the chlorine that radishes contain, which is credited with reducing the acidity in the blood and stomach.  They are high in fiber which helps speed up the transit of food through the digestive system and are also considered to have a soothing effect on the digestive system.  One of the enzymes radishes contain is diastase which aids the digestion of starchy foods.

Why radishes are good for us in other ways

Apart from the properties which help with heartburn radishes also contain numerous other health boosting nutrients and properties.  They are anti-carcinogenic and detoxifying and strengthen our immune system.  They help maintain a healthy skin, are good for our kidneys, liver and gall bladders and can help reduce a fever and congestion.  In fact radishes would appear to be an unknown “Super Food” just waiting to be found.
